WEATHER
January 2026
January started with 3 days of
thunderstorms
between the 2nd and
4th giving us 31.5ml.
Jeff and I were away travelling around
the East Cape during this time, and we
only got 1 day of rain and strong
winds. We were thankful we weren
’
t
there a week later when the storm
really hit the Cape. We actually
camped at Te Araroa which was
devastated by flood waters and slash
flow.
From the 5th to the 13th we had 9 days
of fine weather then on the 14th we got
8.5ml, on the 16th we got 26ml and
then we were launched into the
extremely strong winds and enormous
amount of rain
-
386.5ml over the next
9 days.
Over the first 5 days of the nine, we
got 362ml, then 24.5ml between the
23rd January and 26th giving us
452.5ml for the whole month of
January over 13 days!
Derek recorded 372ml in Hakaru over
15 days for the month of January.
Not much of a summer sun wise but
have certainly felt the heat.~

HISTORICAL CORNER
KAIWAKA PLAYCENTRE OPENING ON HASTIE LANE
Another anniversary is coming up for the Kaiwaka Playcentre. The preschool
group was formed in October 1966 when arrangements were made to rent the
Kaiwaka Domain Pavilion (the former rugby and tennis building). The first Play
Centre session was on the 7th February 1967 with a roll of 28 children attending
on two mornings a week. With a wonderful response from the community the
centre soon began to look for a permanent situation. The former Vallana
Knitwear factory (owned by Valda and Alan McDonald) in Hastie Lane was
purchased in September 1967. Below is a photo of the 1968 opening: Top left

New Way to Work Arrives in Mangawhai
For many people who move to Mangawhai, the trade
-
off is familiar. Better lifestyle
longer commutes.
Andrew Trembath knows that story well.
After welcoming a new baby and settling for the foreseeable in Mangawhai,
Trembath found himself travelling back to Auckland up to three days a week to
work from a city office. Like many professionals who relocate north, he quickly
discovered that while Mangawhai offers plenty of beauty and community, it lacked
one key thing.
A professional, dedicated space to actually get work done.
“
I love living here,
”
Trembath says,
“
but there was nowhere I could work that felt
focused and reliable.
”
Rather than accept the commute as the cost of coastal living, Trembath decided to
solve the problem himself. The result is
Assemble
,
a purpose
-
built co
-
working
space opening in the heart of Mangawhai, designed for professionals who want city
-
level workspaces without leaving town.
Located minutes from the beach, Assemble is a polished, long term co
-
working
environment aimed at people who are serious about their work and serious about the
lifestyle that brought them north in the first place.
Working from spaces like cafés exist but Assemble is designed as a true work base
that is clean, calm, and thoughtfully put together.
“
There are plenty of places to perch with a laptop,
”
Trembath says.
“
But that
’
s not
the same as having a desk you can come back to every day, meeting rooms you can
rely on, and a space that helps you focus.
”
Assemble
offers long
-
term desk and board room rentals in a high
-
spec, modern
environment. Everything is set up so members can arrive, plug in, and get into the
zone without worrying about noise, crowding, or finding a spare table. It
’
s designed
to fit around life in Mangawhai, not compete with it.
The idea is simple, leave the big city without leaving your career behind.
As more professionals move north,
Assemble
aims to support a growing community
of people who want to build meaningful careers while staying connected to the
coast. The space is designed to feel professional without being corporate, calm
without being sterile, and focused without losing its sense of place.
“
People didn
’
t move here to work harder,
”
Trembath says.
“
They moved here to
live better.
”
With surf breaks five minutes away and coffee just as close, Assemble reflects a
new way of working in Mangawhai. One that values quality, community, and
lifestyle in equal measure.
Assemble opens in central Mangawhai on March 9th, with a public open
day to follow on March 15th.

Rotary for March 2026
We started the year in the traditional
way of having a BBQ at the home of
President Tim. This is a potluck event
and a special way to enjoy fellowship
together.
Paparoa A&P show
A number of us were able to support
the Paparoa A&P show event early in
February. I would like to congratulate
one of our members, Stella Clyde, on
becoming Patron for this organization
which turns 150 next year.
DAN MILLS
December sadly saw the passing of
Dan Mills. Both Dan and his wife
Jewell were huge supporters and hard
workers for Rotary over many years.
Our condolences go to the family.
Seniors Afternoon
In December we provided an afternoon
tea for the seniors in our community.
This is an annual event and once again
we were fortunate to be entertained by

. Each year
we notice the progress made by these
talented young people, often starting as
shy individuals, but gaining in
confidence year by year. Whether they
sing as individuals or as a group, their
presentation is quite inspirational. We
wish them all the best for the coming
year.
President Tim couldn

that each one will receive $750.
Congratulation to Connor and
Sophie. We look forward to seeing
what 2026 holds out for you.
Amy Weber
really enjoyed her two
weeks attending the Rotary Science
and Technology Forum. We are
looking forward to hearing more about
this experience which we will share in
the near future.
Our Exchange student, Alina
, spent
the Christmas holidays in Norfolk
Island –
believe it or not, along with a
number of Pacific Islands, is part of
our District. Alina is now staying in
Dargaville and is attending Dargaville
High school. I
hope to catch up with her in the near
future.
We are supporting
Penny Worsfold
,
for her year
-
long visit to Argentina.
She left New Zealand in the middle of
January so is only at the start of her
overseas experience.
If you think you would like to join us,
please chat to a Rotarian. We are
always looking for new members to
give us ideas of ways we can be
involved in the community. ~ Eileen,

THE HAKARU HALL CENTENNIAL
The Hakaru Community Hall logs it's hundredth anniversary, a
century, centennial, a ton!
Opened in 1926
as a focal point for the Hakaru community and surrounding
area. The Hall was raised for the use of all of the residents of the Hakaru river
valley and catchment
-
from the valley at the head of Pebble Brook, through the
Browns Road valley, all the way to the confluence of the Topuni river.
If you are lucky enough to be living in this area, or to have connections to any of
the many families that have filled these plains, we are keen to gather whatever
materials, photos, reminiscences that remain, to further understand and
celebrate the history of this land and the people who have made this their home.
Sharing the recollections of the past will add to our understanding of colourful
past and will be of interest to those of us who wish to add to the history of the
hall. Unfortunately, many of the halls historical records have been lost, leaving
gaps in our collective memory.
We would also like to invite anyone in the described area with any interest in
supporting the Hall and it's custodial group, to introduce yourselves to the
support committee and find out if there is some way in which you might help us
as we move on into our second century.
The hall is well used during the week
, but
with room for more to take advantage of
what we are proud to promote as one of the
best community halls in Aotearoa New
Zealand.
Coming up, the first event of 2026 is the
Mangawhai Art Trail
during the last
weekend of February. We have a group of
artists with work on display, Painters,
sculptors and photographic offerings from
Mangawhai Artists and the Mangawhai
Snappers photography club.
Art, in a revitalised Community Hall, definitely worth a visit, last weekend, 28th

moth plant
This rampant vine is currently flowering so now is a great time to get out and
control it before the infamous pods appear.
Moth plant smothers vegetation and has the potential to devastate forest areas. It
also produces a white milky sap
which can cause dermatitis.
Always wear gloves and long sleeves
when attempting to control moth
plant. Dig or pull out the plants where
possible or cut and paste with
metsulfuron gel.
For more information get hold of us
and we will share some control tips
and tricks.

KAIWAKA LIBRARY
STUCK FOR BOOKS AND CAN'T GET HERE?
I had someone phone the other day, saying they were in
hospital, they didn't have a library card, and they wanted to
borrow some of our eBooks, please, while they were stuck in
bed. I was able to tell them how to go to Enterprise* and join
the library as a digital
-
only member, and they would be able to
borrow from the eBook and other digital collections
immediately. They didn't have pen and paper to write anything
down at the time, so when we finished talking, I was able to
send a text message repeating the information to make it easier
for them. I could see later that they were able to sign up after
that, and we wish a speedy recovery.
Any time you're caught short like this, we can help you. We
can help you sign up online to access the digital collections
(and turn that into a physical library card later on when you
come in with ID, if you want to do that). We can select
physical books for you and arrange to have them delivered to
you or left where you can safely pick them up.
Call the library any time you need our help. If there is
someone here in the library, they will help you, and if we're
closed and no
-
one is here, the call will divert to my mobile,
with no cost to you.
JIGSAWS
Did you know that we loan out jigsaw puzzles? You can
borrow them for 3 weeks, and if that's not long enough for you
they can be renewed for a further 3 weeks. You'll find them on
the shelves in the middle of the main library room, above the
Blu
-
Ray disks.
We have some jigsaws for sale, too
-
like the books and DVDs
for sale they're 50c each, or 3 for $1, or 10 for $2.50. You can
buy a combination of books, DVDs and puzzles for those
prices.
BOOK REVIEWS
I've recently read
We're Not Safe
Here by Rin Chupeco
. "
Wispy Falls
is safe. The town motto is even "You'll be
safe here!" But you aren't safe in the
woods that surround the town. In the
woods, there are monsters. People go
missing in the woods. And sometimes
the monsters don't stay in the woods...
Maybe you aren't that safe in Wispy
Falls
." It has been a long time
(probably since I read Stephen
King's "It" back in the 1980s) since I
was creeped out by a horror story
-
and this one managed it! If this book
is made into a movie, I don't want to
see it
-
I think that would be too much for me. But I really
enjoyed the book and recommend it for anyone who likes a bit
of horror.
Dead Girl Gone by Gareth Ward and Louise Ward
is the first
book in
The Bookshop Detectives series. Garth and Elouise
Sherlock are ex-UK coppers, emigrated to New Zealand, and
opened a bookshop in Havelock North. What could possibly go
wrong?!
This cosy mystery is a fun read; I'd have read it in a
single sitting if I hadn't been a bit tired that day and couldn't
quite keep my eyes open long enough. There are 2 books in the
series, we have them both, and another one comes out later this
year. ~
See you in the library! ~Wendy
